That is exactly what sets the app apart from an ordinary assistant: the answer is not a paragraph of text but a piece of interface in the chat. The cards deliberately follow the look of ChatGPT, not that of NBNL — that is what OpenAI's design rules require.

The app cannot create, change or delete anything — neither on nbnl.de nor in your account, which it is not connected to anyway. Only what the individual call needs is transmitted: a place name for the weather, start and destination for a route. Does the NBNL app in ChatGPT cost anything?

No. The app is free, you need neither an NBNL account nor an API key. Only a fair-use limit of 30 requests per minute per conversation applies, so that the weather and routing services behind it are not overloaded. What your ChatGPT access itself costs is up to OpenAI — not to us.

Do I need an NBNL account?

No. The app only reads public NBNL data and writes nothing. It is not connected to any account, so it can neither see your garage nor save anything in your name. If you sign up on nbnl.de later, that has no effect on the app.

I cannot find the app in ChatGPT — why is that?

Apps are not available on every ChatGPT plan or in every country, and the feature is missing in very old app versions. If an update does not help, the endpoint https://mcp.nbnl.de/mcp-chatgpt can also be entered by hand in the settings under Connectors.

What happens to what I write in the chat?

Only what the respective call requires reaches NBNL — the place name for a weather query, say, or start and destination for a route. We do not build a user profile from it and we do not store conversations. What ChatGPT itself does with your input is governed by OpenAI's terms.

Does this work in Claude, Gemini or Cursor too?

Yes, but without the cards: the widgets are a ChatGPT speciality. Other assistants bind in the NBNL MCP server and get considerably more tools in return — 46 instead of 11, including accidents, routes, POIs, roadworks, dealers and licence theory. The instructions are on nbnl.de/mcp.

Is this still a “ChatGPT plugin”?

OpenAI has retired the old 2023 plugin format. Its successor is the Apps SDK, and technically that is an MCP server with two extra ingredients: widgets that are rendered in the chat, and metadata that tells ChatGPT which card belongs to which tool. That the directory URL still says “plugin” is merely a leftover.
